Redwood top from sinker redwood.

Sinker redwood is salvaged from local river bottoms (probably Big River in this case). These logs sank to the bottom of the river in an era when timber was floated down to the mill from locations up river. Over the decades the wood is cured in the salty estuary brine. The closer the wood is to the cut-off end of the log, the more streaked coloring it has as minerals are drawn up the grain lines.
